Yes, folks, the day so many of us have long awaited is finally here! Fanjita, Ditlew, and the rest of the Noobz team has released version 0.995 of the fabulous eLoader, bringing support for a huge library of homebrew applications to firmware 2.80!

The new version, dubbed the “Kriek” release, appears to be a bit more stable than version 0.99, though there have been reports that some software that worked on firmwares 2.71 and lower with eLoader 0.99 now does not work. To see for yourself, check out the compatibility list on the PSP Homebrew Database to see if your favorite apps are on the list.

And if being able to run EBOOTs on firmware 2.80 isn’t enough for you, there’s more! Noobz is also proud to present the xLoader, a program designed specifically for firmware 2.80 to allow you to run homebrew straight from the XMB. Run the program from the xLoader folder in the PHOTO menu just once, and you’ll be able to load any properly-formatted homebrew straight from the PSP’s GAME menu, until your PSP crashes or goes through a hard reset.

So, what’s “properly-formatted” homebrew? It’s homebrew that has been patched to work with xLoader. How do you patch your homebrew, you wonder? Well, wonder no longer! The included version of the Install-o-tron has a feature to automatically patch any homebrew that you install with it!

Note that the xLoader is only for 2.80; the team skipped over the lower firmwares because of advancements like 2.71 SE-B” and Dark_AleX’s Homebrew Enabler, as well as to save time.

So far, beta testing has shown that a huge collection of homebrew is compatible with Kriek, including favorites like…

- PSP Revolution (version 0.1)
- PSP Radio (version 38.12 Static)
- PiMP Streamer (version 0.62 for 2.xx)
- gpSP (version 0.8)
- Daedalus (version R8)
- Doom-PSP (version 0.05)
- SuperTux
- FileAssistant++ (version 1.2)
- NesterJ (version 1.11)
- Squarez (version 0.8.1)
- snes9x-TYL (version 0.4.2 with the no-intro fix)
- LuaPlayer (version 0.16)
- KETM (version 0.4)
- Bookr (version 0.7.1)
- Droplets
- PortableVNC
- ThrottleX
- Trigonometry Wars

… and the list just goes on and on!
Let’s give the Noobz team a huge round of applause for their tireless efforts! For the full scoop, check out Fanjita’s own news over at the Noobz team homepage.

PSP TIFF Homebrew Pack

October 23, 2006

I have made a homebrew pack that contains all current homebrew. It is updated whenever a new TIFF homebrew comes out. I figured since it is now at v1.2 that I would finally put up something on it. If you want to download it, you can check out the forum post at QJ here. Or the direct download here.

We thought you might like a little something to celebrate the fact that it’s Oktoberfest soon. So what better to raise a drink for than a new eLoader release, named after the Oktoberfest classic, Märzenbier!

The major new feature is support for v2.70 and v2.71 firmwares. That’s right, full support for these 2 firmwares is now added, using a new kernel-mode syscall-finding technique (which is why 2.80 support is not yet possible).

As well as support for the v2.7 firmwares, there is also limited kernel mode support on v2.5-v2.71. This means that the .init program section (which contains functions declared with the ‘constructor’ attribute) will be called in kernel-mode for homebrew built with the kernel mode attribute. Note that you cannot create kernel-mode threads from the init functions in this release, due to security checks in the firmware.

The increased kernel access has also allowed us to add a built-in exception handler to eLoader, so that crashes can be caught and debugged more easily, as well as usually preventing the need to reboot.

You can pick up the Windows auto-installer for “Märzenbier” here, or the ZIP file version for other operating systems here. A list of confirmed working homebrew is in the Homebrew Database:

If you find others that work (or don’t), please make sure to add an entry into the database!

We are pleased to release an updated Homebrew SDK for simple homebrew on 2.0 – 2.80 firmwares. Most important changes are a smaller improved binary-loader and enchantments to function resolving. The loader should now be usable on non-32MB memory sticks aswell (start method).

Alongside, possibly the first “homebrew beep” can now be enjoyed for users of 2.70+ firmwares. Tetris has been updated aswell and now features simple sound output and shows your PSP firmware version.

Non-programmers can download the new Tetris game by clicking here. Programmers can download the Homebrew SDK 1.1 here. Full instructions are included in the SDK, that should allow experienced PSP coders to develop their own TIFF-based programs.

Work on a new eLoader has been progressing aswell, more on that very soon.

Some people have had problems running the TIFF homebrew. Here are some tips that may help:

  • Make sure that you unzip the package so that the 3 files (.tif, .bin and .jpg) are all in a single folder, called ‘tetris’, within the /psp/photo/ folder on your memory stick.
  • Reboot your PSP completely (by holding the power switch for a few seconds until it switches off) before opening the TIFF.
  • Instead of opening the TIFF directly, try opening the folder as a slideshow, by pressing TRIANGLE or by hovering the folder and pressing START.

FreePlay has just ported yet another homebrew favorite to the TIFF 2.7-2.80 (and, once again, 2.0, 2.01, 2.5, 2.6) firmware exploit. FileAssistant, originally created by Lin J.R, is an application which allows you to copy, move, rename, and delete files and folders both on the memory stick, and in the PSP’s flash1, as well as copy files from the PSP’s flash0 to flash1 or your memory stick.

This version is considered, in FreePlay’s own words, as a “stripped-down version of the previous versions”, since there is no working battery level indicator, nor support for UMD options (since the TIFF exploit does not yet have the proper firmware access needed to perform those actions, as the program stands at the moment). However, FreePlay does plan to make a new release in the future, hopefully fixing those capabilities. He also states that this version of FileAssistant is actually faster at reading/writing then all the non-TIFF releases; great work FreePlay!

Robert A. and Percival have just introduced Snakman, ported for 2.7-2.80 TIFF exploit users. The game, based off original code by Yeldarb, is somewhat of a split between Pacman and Snake: the perfect combination of retro gaming, in my opinion. The 2.7-2.80 TIFF homebrew scene is growing incredibly fast, good work!

Be sure to read the included readme.txt in order to properly utilize this piece of homebrew. Also, TIFF Snakman v0.2 does not properly exit yet, a patch may be released soon to fix this.

SG57 has just released a new, handcoded, ACSII-based space invaders clone, specifically coded with the TIFF exploit in mind, ensuring compatibility for 2.7-2.80 (and 2.0, 2.01, 2.5, 2.6) firmwares. Inspired by the work of Art, and his respective ACSII game in X-Flash, SG57 takes an awesome new perspective to the space invaders concept: simple and fun. He also states that he is working on a few other ACSII-based TIFF games, and plans to release them in the near future. Great work SG57, it’s great to see more and more TIFF games popping up!

FreePlay has just released a port of the font hack for PSP, to firmwares 2.7-2.80 (and, of course, 2.0, 2.01, 2.5, and 2.6). The font hack, originally created by FreePlay, himself, TeamOverload, and Skylark, enables users to change the fonts on the PSP’s home XMB screen (check out this screenshot for an example), and allows for italic, bold, shadow, and other style options for fonts. Another awesome leap for 2.7-2.80 homebrew and PSP customization, great work FreePlay!
